No Time for Experiments, Says RB During the launch of his presidential campaign this week, former President Rupiah Banda said that Zambia has too many urgent economic issues that the country can’t afford to experiment with inexperienced leadership in the short 1.5 year transitional term. Banda, if elected, would be constitutionally limited to serve only until 2016, whereas his opponents would spend a good part of the transitional period campaigning for the next election instead of governing, his supporters argue. “When I was leaving the presidency, the price of mealie meal was K35 and bus fares were affordable. Within three years of the PF in government, all the gains Zambia made under President Chiluba, President Mwanawasa and myself have been eroded and we have a chance to correct the mistake we made in 2011 by voting for the PF,” Mr Banda was quoted as saying by the Daily Nation newspaper. Former President Banda said that the previous government had increased the country’s foreign debt to more than US$700 million while the more than US$2.8 million foreign reserves had been plundered by the ruling party. Explaining his return to active politics, the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) candidate said that the previous government had “betrayed the trust of the citizens.” RB says that he decided to come back to active politics to “correct the economic and political wrongs the PF has committed against Zambians” and put the country back on track. Banda also has condemned tribalism and the “family tree” of the PF cabinet, saying that his government would represent people from all over the country instead just a handful of provinces. The former president said that what his other competing candidates were promising were the past results achieved by the MMD – and that he was the one who knew how to take Zambia there again. zambiareports/2014/12/02/time-experiments-says-rb/
