No big deal right? Excavator loading a truck. Listen to the squeak of the bucket and boom pins. This machine ran like this for at least the last two weeks I was on the job. I even offered to be the guys oiler. An oiler is the person who greases machines. When theres no oiler on the job the operator does it. Ive been an oiler but Ive never had the luxury of having one. Every operator has their own grease gun, plus they are usually supplied by the contractor. I took pride in what I did and tried to represent the union and the contractor in the best possible light. There is no freaking way Id have run this more than one truck load. Id have had to stop and grease the damned thing. The 5 minutes it would take could save hours of downtime. And a huge bill when the machine goes back to the rental company. Yes, Im being critical but these arent just my personal standards. Were union brothers and sisters and we represent the trade. We want contractors to hire union labor. We have to show more than just being meat in the seat. And why should I care since Im retiring? Because I will always carry the passion.
