No campaign caught misrepresenting Bank of England Sat, 01/02/2014 - 09:39 The No campaign’s Alistair Darling has faced criticism today after the his campaign’s production of a leaflet misrepresenting the position of the Governor of the Bank of England’s on a currency union post-independence. The leaflet contains the misleading claim that Mark Carney had criticised the idea that an independent Scotland will continue to use the pound after a Yes vote, that an independent Scotland will continue to use the pound after a Yes vote - and the Bank of England have made it clear in response to media inquiries about the leaflet that Mr Carneys speech did not pass judgement on the relative merits of the different currency options for an independent Scotland”. The incident is made even more embarrassing for the No campaign, coming only weeks after Labour’s Shadow Business Secretary, Chuka Umunna, said that “it’s not healthy for us to involve governors of the Bank of England in big political debates”. This is only the latest misleading leaflet distributed by the No campaign, after anti-independence campaigners continued to distribute a leaflet hailing the UK’s AAA credit rating long after it had been downgraded. Commenting, Annabelle Ewing MSP said: “That the No campaign is reduced to misrepresenting Mark Carney shows that they have lost the argument on the currency union and desperation has set in. The Governor’s speech made clear that the Bank of England would implement whatever monetary arrangements are agreed between the Scottish and UK Governments. “The No campaign’s latest gaffe is embarrassing on a number of levels. It is absolutely unacceptable to misrepresent Mark Carney’s views in order to make anti-independence points and this comes just weeks after a senior Labour figure argued against involving the Governor in political debates. “Alistair Darling must take responsibility for this. He should make sure that this leaflet is withdrawn and that a public apology is offered to Mr Carney.” Link to story on Newsnet Scotland newsnetscotland/index.php/scottish-news/8671-carneys-remarks-qspeak-for-themselvesq-says-bank-of-england-as-no-campaign-comes-under-fire Chuka Umunna said: “I think it’s not healthy for us to involve governors of the Bank of England in big political debates and I don’t want to drag him into that.
