No matter if its late realization Gabriela is in the right direction of Truth. Gabriela may opt anti-RH Law By Nicole J. ManagbanagWednesday, July 17, 2013AFTER the Supreme Court ordered the suspension of the implementation of the Reproductive Health (RH) law, the Gabriela party-list now doubts if it would continue to support it.In a statement, Rhodora Bulosan, Gabriela secretary general for Northern Mindanao, admitted that the group was once a supporter of the RH law during its crafting in congress, believing that its implementation would secure the health of women.Point of reservationBulosan said, “the RH law’s population control framework effectively defeats its publicized intent to provide health services and unmask the Aquino government’s duplicity amid the privatization of government hospitals and health services.”She emphasized that they were deceived by the Aquino administration, and that their willingness to support the law has reached “a point of reservation.”“The fight for women’s access to healthcare continues and we remain steadfast in pushing for pro-women, pro-poor and pro-health legislations,” Bulosan said. She said poverty does not root from overpopulation, “it comes from the people behind the administration who only want to make money by taking advantage of perks given by the makers of contraceptives.”The group is against unhealthy contraception and population control as they have their own version of the RH law, Bulosan said.Meanwhile, the Population Commission-10 (Popcom-10) is hoping for the implementation of the law as it will serve as a tool to minimize the population growth of the country which has now reached at 93 million.Popcom-10 assistant regional director Neil Omega explained that the RH law must be implemented, saying that “with the given population, less people are productive and more people will be more dependent that will greatly affect the economy.”Omega said that a 1.9 percent population growth rate is translated to three babies born per minute in the country.“We need four times the economic growth in the country to sustain the population,” he said.Omega said that if we abandon the responsibility to lessen the population, the tendency will be lagging the poverty alleviation. He said based on the population, “we will also look on the availability of jobs, and other opportunities.”
