No party given the current conditions can claim a mandate just by taking control of the Senate. I dont know if the author referred to in this article is right or wrong about the blue wall (I read his article when it was first published), but he makes an interesting analysis. I dont see very many of the red states turning blue, either suddenly or in the near future. I think I can say with confidence though that the Senate will return to Democratic control in 2016 just based on the number of solid blue states that will be up for election. 2018 promises to be a battle for the Senate, and 2020, for the same reasons the Republican Party gained control in 2014, holds great potential for the Republicans to regain control (if they lose it in 2016 or 2018). It has less to do with ideology than it does with the slate of state seats that come up for election.
