‘No scope for reviewing verdict’ Submitted by Shahriar.Asif on Tue, 17/09/2013 - 12:55pm Attorney General Mahbubey Alam has said Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdul Quader Molla, condemned to death by the Supreme Court, can only seek presidential clemency. Asked whether there were any scope of further appeal by the Jamaat Assistant Secretary General, he said after Tuesday’s verdict: “It is a protected law. The legal process ends with the appeal verdict.” Molla will be hanged if the President rejects his mercy plea. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had told Parliament that she hoped the war crimes verdicts would be executed during the tenure of this government. Trying suspected war criminals was one of the ruling Awami League’s electoral pledges. Also Read: Gallows for Quader Mollah The second war crimes tribunal of Bangladesh had sentenced Molla to life in prison on Feb 5 acquitting him one of the six charges. The defence had appealed, seeking acquittal, while the prosecution sought the maximum penalty. A five-member Appellate Division bench, led by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain, gave a verdict on both pleas on Tuesday accepting the prosecution’s appeal. The bench unanimously maintained the tribunal’s sentence on the first, second, third and fifth charges, while the fourth one was revised to life term.
