No tapes exist because shows were recorded over almost immediately after they were broadcast. Says Bud Buschardt, the show’s unit manager and the man tasked with making sure it got on the air, tapes back then cost a whopping $350. “We were recycling before there was recycling,” he says. Which means there’s no footage featuring James Brown, Jefferson Airplane, the Sir Douglas Quintet, Sonny and Cher, Moby Grape, the Monkees, the Mothers of Invention, Sam the Sham and all the other local comers who got their big break playing Chapman’s big show. All we have left is what you see below — and, now, Buschardt’s just-published book on The Sump’n Else Show.
