No to TTIP - Defend our NHS Islington Lu open meeting Monday 15 September 7.30pm Unity Church 277a Upper St London N1 2TZ Speaker: Linda Kaucher: researcher on the EUs international trade agenda, campaigner against TTIP There is great concern about the effects of the US/EU ‘free trade’ agreement (the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership - TTIP) on the NHS. Stuck as we currently are with the privatising Health and Social Care Act (2012), there is a growing awareness that once this is part of TTIP, the Act will become irreversible – exactly as the ConDem government intends. Despite misleading pretence, including from Labour Party TTIP promoter John Healey MP, it is now openly admitted by trade minister Lord Livingston that the NHS is not protected in TTIP. There is no TTIP exemption for our health service. Weak Labour Party mutterings about reversing the Act if they are elected in 2015 shows they have joined in the pretence that this will be a possibility, with no real commitment to forcing a formal exemption of the NHS from the agreement. A particularly dangerous part of TTIP, entrenching the power of corporations to call the tune on how regulations limit, or do not limit, their activities, is the inclusion of investor state dispute provision (ISDS) in the agreement. ISDS will allow transnational corporations to sue governments for any regulatory change that negatively affects their future corporate profits – such as any attempt to reverse the Health and Social Care Act. We need an NHS exemption and must fight against TTIP overall. Come and discuss how we can support campaigning on this crucial issue.
