No words can express my heartbreak in letting people know that our band stallion Herkimur of the little band of 5 was tragically hit by a motorcycle on Hwy 50 and was euthanized by bullet at 8:45 PM last night. Our condolences go out to the family of the motorcycle rider who died in this horrible accident. Even when driving below the speed limit of 65 MPH, it is VERY difficult to see a horse trotting or running toward the highway, out of the darkness, and often a person doesnt even see them until they are right in front of the vehicle. Herkimurs family had to be chased away from the highway and were really spooked and scared as they ran snorting and whinnying through the sagebrush past me as I was searching for them. I was unable to go on the scene of the accident because there were MANY emergency vehicles, and I also felt like I needed to go into protect mode for Mamacita, their yearling son Zorro, the most recent mare addition to the band several months ago Sable, and baby Sepphia. A friend and I moved them through the sagebrush away from the highway to above our property because we were afraid they would keep running back to the highway. I ended up parking my truck with a load of hay on it at the top of our property, so we were able to keep them situated there over night, and they are still between our neighbors house on the property above us and ourpropert, but I will be monitoring them today to make sure they dont head down to the highway looking for Herkimur, whose body has been removed. Its at times like this I want to be out of here NOW, far from ANY highways, and moved out to the property we are buying (escrow closes next Monday, and we were able to earn the $20,000 down payment by working in our business, and also taking jobs we normally would not), but until we can afford to make the move with corral panels being taken down and hauled, other materials bought in order to set things up, and then move the horses, and our other animals, every time the phone rings from someone I know who also loves the wild horses, Im afraid of more bad news of horses being hit (there was a collision with a Ford Explorer and 3 beautiful mares, most likely pregnant, all dying in one accident just last Friday night, and then another horse earlier in the week got killed in broad daylight), or seeing horses grazing close to the highway when its getting dark and if someone tries to move them away from the highway, they take the chance the horses will run around them across the highway into the path of a car, truck, or semi-truck. Yesterday morning Herkimur and I were having a mental meeting of the minds for a few minutes where we stood looking at one another. Then his son Zorro wanted him to play, so the spell was broken, and they went trotting off into the sagebrush nipping each other, with Dad playing with his son as all good fathers do. Later that afternoon the horses were hanging out in the front yard by the willow tree, and then after I got home with the hay after dark and was speaking with someone in my driveway, we both heard a muffled bang and then a whistle like a car blew a tire.......THAT was the collision, and now none of us who loved the band of 5 will ever be the same again........ All we can do now is comfort Mamacita, her children, and the new mare Sable, just as they comfort us in return with their beauty and presence in our lives RIP sweet Herkimur, your family WILL be protected, and I pray you are wild and free with other Wild Ones who have passed.........
