Noam Chomsky says US-Russia tensions could spark nuclear war American philosopher Noam Chomsky believes that the escalating tensions between the United States and Russia could spark a nuclear war. “The worst-case scenario, of course, would be a nuclear war, which would be terrible. Both states that initiate it will be wiped out by the consequences. That’s the worst-case,” he told Russia Today when asked about the strained relations between Washington and Moscow. “And it’s come ominously close several times in the past, dramatically close. And it could happen again, but not planned, but just by the accidental interactions that take place – that has almost happened,” Chomsky added. The two powers are at loggerheads over a number of issues. The United States blames Russian President Vladimir Putin for supporting pro-Russian forces in Ukraine. The Kremlin has denied the allegation. US President Barack Obama has repeatedly threatened Putin with more sanctions over the crisis in Ukraine. Chomsky said the sanctions against Russia were driving the country towards the East, and towards closer relations with China. He also noted that humans have come dangerously close to a nuclear war. “There have been many cases, not that serious, but pretty close, where human intervention with a few-minutes choice has prevented a nuclear war. You can’t guarantee that’s going to continue,” the well-known author said. The political commentator also warned of the end of the human race. “It’s worth remembering that just one century ago, the First World War broke out through a series of such accidental interchanges. The First World War was horrifying enough, but the current reenactment of it means the end of the human race,” Chomsky said. presstv/detail/2014/11/08/385191/usrussia-rift-end-in-nuke-war-chomsky/
