Nobody seems to remember why they stopped National service; The Armed Services need trained technicians, not cannon fodder. Two years after the majority of enlisted recruits were satisfactorily trained to acceptable technical standards, the newly qualified recruit left, the National Service requirement being finished! Not very cost effective, or practical, in military terms at least. The majority of recruits did not sign up as regulars, so the scheme was scrapped by government. How much civilian society profited from the training is debatable, private business probably saw some benefit, but as a rule, apart from basic literacy, numeracy & a certain amount of discipline, most companies like to train personnel in their own ways, by their own methods
