Non-Techy Tuesday: Quickie file naming strategy As would be expected from someone pedantic, I have a very specific way I name folders and individual files so that everything is consistent. I would not deign to bore you with such trivia because even I can admit I’m a bit over the top. However, if you keep multiple iterations of files, one idea you ought to adopt is to incorporate a specifically formatted date. Americans generally write the date as month, day, then year. Even when doing it “shorthand” we use MM/DD/YYYY. July 29, 2014 or 07/29/2014 But if you’d like your files to be listed chronologically, this date format does not work. Many of my files (finances, sample edits, personal photos, versions of documents) are dated. I put year, then month, and finally day so that within each folder, the files are sequential. Like this: YYYYMMDD Balance Sheet This way, when you have several iterations of a document within the same folder, there is no searching for the most recent version. It will be at the bottom (or top) of the list, depending on how you sort. 20140110 Balance Sheet 20140315 Balance Sheet 20140530 Balance Sheet 20140715 Balance Sheet Again, this isnt something you need to spend hours retrofitting to older documents. However, incorporating YYYYMMDD today will help you be more organized a year from now. Have a great day! ~ Tara
