Non-sequitur brain dump in the hope that I can finally get it out - TopicsExpress

Non-sequitur brain dump in the hope that I can finally get it out of my head so I can move on. 30-ish years ago I read A Wrinkle in Time. The one thing that has always stood out for me is a line at the end when Calvin takes Megs glasses off, sees her without them for the first time, returns her glasses and says something to the effect of Keep those on, I dont want anyone else seeing what dreamboat eyes you have. It grated on me instantly, and I didnt yet know why. It was supposed to be a romantic moment; a squee-inducing, the-cool-cute-boy-notices-the-dorky-homely girl story, and being the dorky, homely girl myself on the cusp of puberty, it appealed to me on one level (especially since I pined away for Chad Nefkin [sp??], terribly. Constantly. Painfully. For years.). However, it also grated on me. Now I know that it was possessive and controlling. And then I wonder as I think back How many other books we grew up on showed us that this was how romantic love was supposed to be? (Rhetorical...) Between that, Harlequin and Disney, no wonder so many are messed up. And this concludes the Jodie-actually-had-coffee-this-morning-coffeecoffeecoffeecoffeecoffeecoffeecoffeecoffeecoffee post.
