Normally I dont get involved when customers exchange words so to say, but I have no use for intolerance of any sort, so tonight I spoke up. In my line were two women, both regulars. The first an elderly lady, the second a black woman who I know is a nurse across the street at the nursing home. She was on her phone speaking French. The elderly woman was growing annoyed with the conversation and after many rolled eyes and loud sighs, she turned around saying Why dont you just go back to your own country, alright? The womans face dropped and she hung up her phone. I was disgusted. So I said to the elderly woman this country was founded by immigrants from all walks of life. This woman has every right to be here and to speak her native language if she so chooses. Im sure there was a point in time when a relative of yours was a foreigner to our shores. She looked at me clearly appalled that I was defending the immigrant woman. She muttered something about young people not preserving America, and stormed off. To me preserving America is being welcoming to the hard working immigrants who come here to make a better life for themselves and for their families, because that is the case for most American families. Somewhere down the line, be it the last 10 years or last 100 years, we were all immigrant families.
