Northampton Receives 5-Star Rating for Sustainability NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WGGB) — Northampton becomes the first in the United States to receive a 5-star rating in sustainability. The designation was made by STAR Communities, an organization based in Washington, D.C. The STAR rating system is divided into the areas of built environment, climate and energy, economy and jobs, education, arts and community, equity and empowerment, health and safety, and natural systems. A total of 44 objectives are evaluated. “We’ve been working over a numbers of years in all areas of city government to really promote sustainability, whether it’s the environment, whether it’s transportation, even within our financial sphere, we’ve been trying to work on that,” says Northampton Mayor David Narkewicz STAR Communities looks for waste and greenhouse gas reductions, investments in the economy, and improvements in education.
