Northern Rivers fishy fact this week. Many people have speculated on the origin of eastern cod, with a popular theory being river capture (massive floods) many millions of years ago. Take a look at the map and you will notice that almost all, and all older, significant tributaries of the Clarence river, flow to the North. The main Clarence River itself flows south. Its speculated (using a scientific explanation too long winded and complex to write here) that many million years ago, the clarence river itself ran North, and joined the Condamine river in South East Qld. Through this age old join, the river itself was full of Murray Cod (or a previous species of cod) which then evolved and changed to suit the shallower, faster flowing waters of the Clarence. As the McPherson ranges pushed upwards this over time separated the two rivers, and created what we now know today as the clarence river catchment. This catchment is typically Rocky bed, fast running and steep valleys, with the Clarence itself being shallower and sandy, perhaps a result of it changing shape and direction millions of years ago. Bass would have moved into the river via the pacific ocean in more recent times, showing the Cod are truly one of the most important and undoubtedly oldest custodians of the river. so in summary, The clarence river itself once ran north as its tributaries did, and was once part of the murray-darling basin.
