Northern elders, politicians behind insurgency – IYC The October ultimatum given to President Goodluck Jonathan by the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) to produce the Chibok girls or forget about contesting the 2015 presidential election has exposed northern politicians and leaders as sponsors of insurgency in the North. This was the position of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Worldwide, in a statement on Wednesday signed by its spokesman, Eric Omare. The IYC was reacting to media reports on Tuesday credited to the NEF, which issued October deadline to Jonathan, asking him to rescue the Chibok girls and end insurgency in the North otherwise he would not return to Aso Rock next year. It argued that by those publications, the northern elders had confirmed the suspicion in some quarters that they were behind the activities of Boko Haram insurgents to discredit the President’s administration. The Ijaw youth body called on the Federal Government to order their immediate arrest for promoting co-ordinated violence and terrorism. It pointed out that the deadline to Jonathan was the climax of unpatriotic and desperation for power by northern political elements. The IYC said the northern elders lacked the moral grounds to blame the President for insurgency in the area, as they had done practically nothing to tame the insurgents. According to the IYC, no amount of blackmail by some northern elders and politicians would dim Jonathan’s chances in the elections. The IYC said: “By this publication, the Northern elders have confirmed the consistent position of the IYC and other well-meaning Nigerians that the insurgency in the North is being fuelled by politicians and some leaders of Northern extraction like members of the Northern Elders Forum to discredit the government of President Jonathan so as to make his candidature unpopular in 2015. “The IYC regards this as unpatriotic and the height of desperation for power by some Northern leaders and call for their immediate arrest for fuelling insurgency in the North. “The IYC wishes to state clearly that no amount of blackmail by some northern leaders through insurgency or any other means would stop President Jonathan from seeking a second term in office in line with the 1999 Constitution.”
