Norton United take their place in next round of FA Cup A fine all round team performance with every player contributing to the victory over Spalding United. Norton made a very encouraging start and we went on the attack from the whistle. Michael Lennon, with a tremendous turn and shot, beat the keeper only to see the ball rebound off the post to safety. The offence continued and Niall Green and Glynn Blackhurst gave the home defence terrible problems. In the thirteenth minute Niall Green sent over a beautiful cross, Glynn Blackhurst rose at the far post and planted a fantastic header beyond the keeper and into the net. A great start for the home side. Norton lost Jamie Skellern to injury mid way through the half. Spalding worked hard to get back into the game but such was the Norton determination that any progress was difficult. However, in the thirty fifth minute a cross from the Spalding right was headed into his own net by Tom Winkle as he attempted to clear. Norton were not too dispirited and ended the half back on top. Lee Cropper and Leigh Skellern were giving the home attack real energy and the pressure they exerted on the visitors caused all sorts of panic. They rarely had time to clear the ball with any accuracy. Scott made a change and moved Leigh Skellern to the right. The visitors left back will have had nightmares. Leigh turned him inside out and he would have taken ages to untangle himself after the game. On seventy minutes Leigh Skellern put the Spalding defence under extreme pressure and blocked the attempted clearance. The bounce favoured him and the defender tripped him as he went towards the goal. The referee, who had a very good game, awarded the penalty. Up game Tom Fogg and he calmly struck the ball home with the keeper having been sent the wrong way. It was a lead Norton fully deserved and the resolution in their play became evident as the visitors tried to push for an equaliser. During this Danny Roberts made one fabulous save to keep the lead intact. A few moments later the final whistle saw Norton celebrate a fine victory and entry into the next round.
