Norway spruce (Picea abies) is one of the most widely planted - TopicsExpress

Norway spruce (Picea abies) is one of the most widely planted landscape spruces (along with Colorado blue spruce) in our area. Their great size and rapid growth lends them for use as very effective screening trees, or landscape focal points. They are typically found in two distinct crown growth forms, the comb and brush forms can be seen at the Arboretum. This is not a tree to plant right next to the house as they can easily exceed 100 feet in height, and spread up to 40ft! Compared to other spruce species that do well in this area, Norway spruce is the most sensitive to drought. If the grass in your lawn is turning brown, your Norway spruce is probably suffering. To be safe the entire root zone will need up to an inch of water per week during droughts.
