Not a football fan at all, so I dont really know (or care) who Ray Rice is. Its been interesting to see his wife defending him assaulting her. Im no defender of celebrity media but -- as always -- I got some thoughts. If Ray and Janay had been two guys in a security video from a Burger king parking lot, it would have just been felony assault, right? If the police pick you up for B&E, or contributing to the delinquency of a minor, you dont usually get to say well, its a family member and we want you to respect our privacy by not arresting me. If Ray, who last time I checked was a black man in America, isnt in jail, Its because he has money and social influence. I think its perfectly appropriate for his employer, if theyre serious about halting domestic violence, to strip him of his social advantages. Football is a violent sport. Anyone in Rays position has been praised for being good at a violent sport for a long, long time. Why are we surprised? Who cares if the NFL is inconsistent and self-serving? If they are, its because theyve figured out that well let them. They are headed in the right direction. I dont know either of them and Im not in to shaming victims. I find it very disturbing that Janay seems to be saying America, you are hurting us unfairly. Ray isnt a victim in this scenario. Hes an abuser. America, we gotta get consistent on how we view crime by young black men. A bunch of black men are arrested, brutalized or killed for being in the wrong place at the wrong time? Maybe theyre innocent, maybe not. One rich black man get caught brutalizing his wife, were supposed to respect their privacy? Im calling bulls**t on that. Gut check for the political partisans. If this were Bill Clinton or Rush Limbaugh or one of the Koch brothers, would you be cheering? Would it confirm all your assumptions about those bad people? Every day we can check the news and find another atrocity perpetrated on women in the developing world. We all wish we could do something about it. This is a situation where just the video itself could affect changes. At what point does respecting Janay become enabling Janay?
