Not all research projects go as hoped. I once had the idea of developing a disposable toothbrush. It would save costs by slipping over the index finger rather than have a handle. A small foam pad over the fingerprint would have a dab of toothpaste preapplied to it. Wetting the foam pad and pressing it against your teeth would push the toothpaste onto the surface of the pad. The index finger would have more dexterity than a normal toothbrush and these would be so cheap that they could be included in school lunches and happy meals. Since everyone could brush his teeth after every meal. Americas dental health should skyrocket. I was going on a two day business trip and thought this would be the perfect time to test the idea. To make them, I bought a box of disposable medical gloves and used only the pinky finger since I wanted a tight fit on my pointer finger. I cemented some foam squares onto the fingertip of the glove. Worked great. Since I didnt want the toothpaste to dry out, I got some small sized sandwich bags and placed the rolled up glove tips in one corner. Then a hot iron sealed that small area and I had a little packet slightly larger than a postage stamp. I planned to use a foil lined paper packet in production, but these would work for now. OK, pack up and leave on the trip. I drove to my destination and checked in for my two night stay. The next mid morning I had the opportunity to go back to my room for a bit and noted that the maid had already been in. As I walked past the bed I noticed the mint on the pillow along with a row of my mini fingertip toothbrushes. ??? Then it hit me. She had seen those little packets on my night stand and thought they were condoms! Embarrassingly SMALL condoms. Now I was worried. Would I run into this lady in the hallway somewhere? Would she know that I was the guy in room 217? Would I be able to look her in the eyes? I solved the problem by checking out early and going to another hotel for the rest of my trip. On the drive to that hotel, I stopped to buy a toothbrush.
