Not enough turkeys to go around this Thanksgiving SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Springfield Open Pantry has just 89 Turkeys so far. Hundreds of families that qualify for a free turkey will be applying next week. The Open Pantry’s Candace Larger told 22News, because of the cost of turkeys, the western Massachusetts food bank purchased fewer birds so as not to have to cut back on other essentials. The Open Pantry’s Yami Ruiz told 22News it breaks her heart. “Every time, every time when we don’t have enough we hand them out in the boxes. It’s kind of sad when it’s not enough.” While the Open Pantry struggles to provide turkeys for hundreds of needy Springfield families, neighboring communities have also turned to the Open Pantry for help. “We can’t even do Springfield, and so we feel terrible, but we haven’t been able to respond to their people,” said Larger The Open Pantry’s putting out the call for people to donate turkeys between now and next Wednesday in time for the open pantry signup.
