Not exactly pretty,but when the SHTF functionability is ALL that matters,doesnt even matter if the clay/dirt/mud is dry. Ideally you would want it to be a bit larger (especially if in a group),but it will work if you dont have the time (over night camp,gathering supplies,etc...) to put into it. Also: you dont actually have to waste time making one if you can find an embankment,you can simply dig one inside the embankment. If you are in a more permanent camp type bugout and worry about someone seeing the smoke,Id recommend (if dug inside of a small embankment/hill) digging a small tunnel (about 6 around) leading a good deal away from your camp and allow the smoke to escape further away from your campsite. Not only will this miss lead any possible threats (of the human kind),but also could allow you the upper hand. ;) hang something in a nearby tree so that if its me I can let you know and work together. I may make a video (or take pics) of wat Im talking about,but it will be this summer because the place I have in mind is extremely moist (even in the summer).
