Not many people know this...I turned down a full scholarship to UT Austin in photography in order to pursue music. I got very lucky my senior year in high school, and took first place in two photography categories and second place in another (in which my classmate took first...we had a great photography teacher and a totally awesome journalism teacher). Im very happy I made that decision, but I missed photography. I still had very nice film cameras, but it became so much less practical to use them for internet photos that I bought a couple of point-and-shoot cameras. OK, but not great. I held off buying a real digital camera because I couldnt afford the ones I really wanted (there are still music tools Im prioritizing), and the mid-grade choices that I could afford werent that good. But Canon released one that was interesting, and I took the plunge. I wanted to see if I would get back into the groove, and enjoy photography as much as I did when I was a kid. Well, now I am without my camera for five weeks--because after about 60,000 photos in just over a year, Id worn the shutter out. I got lucky again and its going to be a warranty repair. The dealer (Competitive Camera on Irving Blvd) is great. And he thinks it is probably safe to assume that I am enjoying my second round of photography addiction. But man, am I ever having withdrawal symptoms. I never realized how many times a day I reach for that camera, until it stopped working. Crazy. Its not surprising that I end up shooting mostly musicians, actors, and people blissing out to music. Im lucky to have friends who dont mind me pointing at them. A lot.
