Not sure if Andy is going to stick around for a discussion or not - sounds like a big *not* - but I thought Id share this just in case anybody is interested and he actually does come back. Andy Twilley Just because someone denies the existence of God doesnt make Him any less real. Similarly believing the theory of evolution doesnt mean it is true. After all, it is only a theory, not a fact. As with most (if not all) forms of scientific knowledge, scientific theories are inductive in nature and aim for predictive power and explanatory force. The strength of a scientific theory is related to the diversity of phenomena it can explain, and to its elegance and simplicity (Occams razor). As additional scientific evidence is gathered, a scientific theory may be rejected or modified if it does not fit the new empirical findings- in such circumstances, a more accurate theory is then desired. In certain cases, the less-accurate unmodified scientific theory can still be treated as a theory if it is useful (due to its sheer simplicity) as an approximation under specific conditions (e.g. Newtons laws of motion as an approximation to special relativity at velocities which are small relative to the speed of light). Scientific theories are testable and make falsifiable predictions. They describe the causal elements responsible for a particular natural phenomenon, and are used to explain and predict aspects of the physical universe or specific areas of inquiry (e.g. electricity, chemistry, astronomy). Scientists use theories as a foundation to gain further scientific knowledge, as well as to accomplish goals such as inventing technology or curing disease. Scientific theories are the most reliable, rigorous, and comprehensive form of scientific knowledge. This is significantly different from the common usage of the word theory, which implies that something is a conjecture, hypothesis, or guess (i.e., unsubstantiated and speculative). Like · Reply · 9 hrs Flossy Goliard Then by the same definition, your god is nothing more than an unsupported hypothesis, as it is unable to be substantiated, is an unexplained aspect of human thought which is unable to be tested through the scientific method and repeatedly found unable to be confirmed through observation and experimentation. Unlike · Reply · 1 · 7 hrs Andy Twilley Interesting comment however unfortunately fundamentally flawed. You assume that the only process of proof is scientific, and I would certainly never suggest that religion / God can be proved scientifically. Just as love or other human emotions cant be proved (nor even described) by science, would you therefore suggest they dont exist? This is the mistake so many people make, using the wrong frame of reference to try to determine whether or not it is true. Keep thinking it through. Its worth it. Like · Reply · 6 hrs Denying Evolution Wont Make Your God Any More Real Youre still not understanding the scientific use of the word, theory. The overarching theory of evolution explains tens of thousands of facts that all point towards evolution. Love is not something we need to worry about proving although brain scans can indicate quite a bit about that human emotion, including what chemicals are involved. Calling an emotion, love doesnt entail insisting that a whole bunch of people live the way we want them to live because a god that we insist exists despite no evidence whatsoever wants them to. Love isnt what leads us to deny civil rights to others that we enjoy for ourselves. Your religion is very costly. The world will be a much better off if we can ever get rid of it. End of discussion. Like · Reply · 2 hrs Denying Evolution Wont Make Your God Any More Real Ive lost the argument by wanting to get rid of religion? You realize that everybody once thought the world was flat, right? And millions of people do not have faith in exactly the same god you do. As far as I can tell, everybody believes in a slightly different god than everybody else. God is whoever they want god to be, mixed in with an interpretation of what their holy book says.
