Not sure if this will yield any comments but since I dont have kids I am interested in knowing what those who do think/feel: Lately, and randomly people have been getting into conversations with me (some not knowing I teach) about our school system and how kids of recent generation are going through the system not being accountable for their behaviours, responsibilities and actions. This is prevalent in todays workforce where employers are scrambling to find hard working individuals that dont feel they are entitled to everything. I myself am sometimes get frustrated because today kids take vacation during school time, they can more easily get away with skipping during a test because a note from home holds a lot of weight (and you know the kid went to all their classes except for yours), prior to failing a kid, you have to provide them with an opportunity to pass (we provide students with many opportunities and they choose not to take it then during report card time they decide to hand in their homework from 2 months ago, and yes, we have to mark it), we speak to students about any issues and I admit when I feel that there is an understanding between myself and the student I dont always get a hold of the parents, and then I hear from them asking why they were not kept in the loop (Again, this is not always the case, but at the same time when I was in school my parents asked me to show them what I was doing and they asked me about my homework and teachers), I send e-mails to parents both about good and bad behaviour and I either dont hear back or if its for challenging behaviours they mention that I can keep them after school (what about asking billy about his actions)? Its becoming challenging as a high school teacher to teach the very first block of the day because half the kids are coming in up to 15 minutes late (again, we have to excuse them because they have a note either from home or their counsellors because they slept in). Again, I am not a parent but I feel that it is soooo unfair to students that dont do all of the above and are good students. Its like what came first the chicken or the egg? I am not trying to say there are bad parents and bad teachers out there, but does it start in the home or at school?
