Note : Erythroplakia is defined as “any lesion of the oral mucosa that presents as a bright red velvety plaque which cannot be characterized clinically or pathologically as any other recognizable condition”. Erythroplakia is a potentially malignant disorder; almost all lesions contain dysplastic cells and most contain severe dysplasia (40%), or are carcinoma in situ, or carcinoma (51%). Carcinomas appear many times more frequently in erythroplakia than in leukoplakia.
