Notes from Walkabout Ridge. That is what they call this place. Walkabout is right. After each chore I dont know how it is I am still standing. The Lord has been good to me in more ways than 1 on this journey & I havent fallen. This isnt to say I am taking it for granted. Horse-dog Toby has come close to pushing me off the porch a few times. That is a 6 foot drop. The whole have something terrible happen & wait until somebody finds me is a little unnerving. This is why when I could not get a firm count on sheep until 6 tonight, I did not spend my day trudging through the fields looking for the maimed one the coyotes got last night. But alas, they are all here. This always feels like the best part of the day. Everyone is watered & fed, transferred & counted. The cows actually showed up this afternoon, but a cow & the 2 calves were nowhere to be seen earlier. Tonight I can count all of them. Real quick, I made and replaced the food in the hummingbird feeders a few days ago. They will only drink out of one. A couple will try out the other each day & there seems to be stuff coming out but they dont like the one. It all came out of the same pitcher. Go figure. Bad pig report...one of the sows was heavily rubbing on the main pen gate tonight. I am afraid she is going to break it. What am I going to do then? I guess I will have 5 big-butt pigs out in the main field because I am not fixing the gate & I am not herding these HUGE animals back into the pen. They are dangerous. Now THEY would knock me over & trample me! I know I keep asking what would I do but I want to have an idea of what direction to head if things go wonky. The thing is, just because today has gone fine, it needs to be followed with so far. I never feel like I am in the clear. Things can still happen this evening, overnight, in the morning, & on & on. Auntie & Alan can be all, It will be fine but these arent my animals & if I kill one because I am not paying attention, I cant afford to replace it. OK there are a few that I think they would understand...the blind chicken, the old duck, Harry the old sheep. 2 of the dogs are quite old & I was told if they go, get them outside & put a sheet over them. They would dig the hole when they got home. 1st, you bet your bottom dollar I am not digging any hole for a dead dog. 2nd, could I really drag it outside? 3rd, this is the type of landscape that I would not be able to just put a sheet over it & guarantee something would not drag it off in the middle of the night. I was told to check the baby duck twice a day to make sure it is still alive. WHAT IF IT IS NOT? And my favorite unspecific & comical instruction...regarding the kid goats... Dont feed them too much. Only a handful (for 11 goats). It will make them sick & dehydrated. Make sure they have water so they dont get dehydrated. You can always get them to do what you want if you give them grain. It isnt good for them to have too much water. WHAT??? This is where Becca ceases to be a farmer. It is almost bedtime and it looks like no evil lurks in the woods tonight. All the sheep are out In the field.... I hope yall have a wonderful & peaceful night. One more day.
