Notes from the Klondike, Part I of II – “O - TopicsExpress

Notes from the Klondike, Part I of II – “O Canada”: Pleasant surprises are among the principal delights of travel, and I experienced one within fifteen minutes of arriving in Whitehorse. My son and I pulled into the Robert Service Municipal Campground late in the afternoon, in order to rent a campsite, set up our tent, and walk into the city for a good meal. The campground is lovely (the photographs below do not do it justice), not the least because it is filled with towering evergreens and is bordered by the magnificent Yukon River. We had just secured a site and were about to unload the truck, when I witnessed indisputable evidence that Canada is an enlightened country. I saw a man sitting in a lawn chair with his feet propped up on a stool. A large portion of fish – probably salmon – was cooking on a grill beside him. In his left hand this fortunate son of Canada held a glass of white wine, from which he took a large and, judging by his smile, delectable sip. Drinking wine in a city park! Imagine going to Gulley Park – or almost any public park in the United States - with a picnic basket containing bread, cheese, and a bottle of Chenin Blanc. Then imagine a law enforcement official asking you to leave the park – or worse. I know that seeing a person drinking wine in a public park would be unremarkable for anyone from Europe or any other civilized place, but it gave me something to think about on the long drive home.
