Nothing concentrates the mind better on the villages inadequate - TopicsExpress

Nothing concentrates the mind better on the villages inadequate public transport services than being deprived of ones car or the ability to drive it (broken wrist). A taxi to town is £10 so thats £20 return. West Ayton is predominantly made up of pensioners; how can they afford a £20 return trip by taxi? The bus service is extremely limited in that it appears only able to drop you at the ... railway station. You got it. The old route via Racecourse has disappeared completely so a trip to the hospital involves complex timetable juggling. To his credit David Jeffels has fixed up a shopping service on Wednesdays only for about £3 a turn, but it reminds me a bit of the old Ford motor car adage: You can have any colour, as long as its black. You can shop on any day as long as its a Wednesday. An isolated, carless pensioner with no means to carry a heavy bag is left with the only alternative of a walk to the Spar and a limited shop at best. At least now its the school holidays getting into town of a weekday morning will be much easier.
