Nothing is better and simpler than using the light that is existing. This is from recent in studio Spring Blast workshop. One of the most challenging things facing photographers is the thought process of over thinking a situation. I learned at a very young age that clients are impatient and dont want to wait. They dont want to waist time in a pose or waiting for you to set light and so on and on. Todays technology allows you to do just about anything with a camera. This creates major problems going forward as just about anybody who picks up a camera thinks they are a photographer. How can you separate yourself? Its simple learn to pose and direct like a choreographer to light. A photographer works to and towards light. Follow these simple rules , find light, Identify the light and most important match and white balance to the light. I am in an outdoor night time situation which means you would expect the dominate light to be daylight blue light around 5000k however I decided to bring the subject closer to tungsten light roughly 3200k which will now become the main light. Yes I am mixing light but my white balance will be great here. Why? Because by making the main light tungsten and WB for it. Whatever is not tungsten will deepen and saturate. This is whats creating the beautiful open and blue skies. Another key is making sure the light on the subject is not too bright this will force a closed down exposure while of course darling your background. I know a lot of info. But actually quite simple dont over think. Image #1 is shot overly wide to show the light position. It is coming from roughly 45 degrees behind the subject from the retail window on the right. It is tungsten. I have moved my camera position to create a perfect profile of the subject which in turn because of lighting position creates a beautiful wrap around light. Better known as profile lighting. I know the light is a hot spot and I would crop out in the finished image but I wanted to show you its position. In image two and three I have kept the light the same to her face and body the same and just moved camera position to the wall. This now creates a 2/3 facial angle to the camera. In all 3 exposures I am at ISO 1600 1/15 sec at 2.8 with my Nikon #d4 and 70-200 VRII lens. I am obviously shooting on my Adorama #flashpoint Tripod . My camera height is slightly above eye level. The depth of the image is deep because of the full out 200 zoom but more importantly because of the lighting pattern and me shooting into a background with light in it. The slower shutter speed is allowing the lights from the buildings to burn in and open the exposure up. My white balance is for tungsten. On the last one same principal but now I am using the overhead street light which is roughly 45 degrees behind the subject camera left. Also tungsten and more important creating a perfect profile light on both male and female. You cannot allow the male subject to get too deep in neck or the light will be in shadow on him and make him way too dark. I have a very low camera angle and am tilting to camera right which allows her to raise up in the farm and give a lot more depth the ISO is 2500 and exposed again at 1/15 sec at 2.8 . Now the question everybody is thinking arent you afraid of camera or subject movement. Tell them to stay still watch them like a hawk and most importantly be calm and dont stress. I dont get camera shake because I dont panic about it. Well I hope this helps a little . If you want to see how simple this comes together.
