Nothing is easier than accusing a politician of corruption. It is so easy that the practice has become the Filipinos favorite pastime. The hollow satisfaction we derive from pestering the privileged elite with these spectacular accusations is an opiate we choose to amuse ourselves with as we bleat in the shadows of perpetually unserved justice. The truth is few things are more difficult than actually proving beyond a reasonable doubt that a politician is guilty of corruption. Our toothless prosecutors are politicized & impotent & act only in the vested interests of the bureaucracy, whereas affluent defendants are flanked by batteries of the best attorneys the taxpayers money can buy. Not only do we have to confront the bitter reality of a doomed & fruitless protest, Filipinos have to deal with the dismal truth that our own tax money is being used to pay for the formidable defense lawyers who protect the politicians we wish to indict. So we yell Corruption! and they say Objection. and thats the end of that. With our breed of lawmakers, who needs lawbreakers?
