“Nothing this big has happened since homestead days. This is a game changer for North Dakota.” Thats what North Dakotas former tourism director told us about the oil and gas boom sweeping the state. Since the beginning of 2010, energy companies have drilled more than 8,000 wells in the states western portion. But despite the billions collected from oil taxes and a rather uncommon labor shortage, the past four years have been a profound rewrite of North Dakotas modern history — largely by the oil and gas industry. Whether through campaign cash, charitable donations or larger contributions to the economy, the industry has gained a level of influence that’s hard to overstate.
