Noting that in the time that I was between the ages of 12-15 the music scene in and around Venlo was very clique based. Punks did not mix with the kinda elitist rock scene and the no brain metal scene. The alternative musicians where snobbish as well in their own niches. Besides myself there where few people crossing the lines between music scenes. I wanted to play in a band but to qualify for the rock bands you needed to be able to play YYZ by Rush ha ha. There where few musicians interested in metal yet and the altos where too snobbish so a punk band it was to be! With long hair and wearing a Dead Kennedys T-shirt underneath a denim vest covered in badly sewn patches of metal AND punk-bands, rusty chains, screws and nails instead of store bought studs I was determined to stand out (yes I was taller than most but still). Somehow managed to get Theo Slaats to come and sing, writing lyrics against Nazis and world wrongs. His brother Louis Slaats was more reluctant and into more mainstream rock music ( always thought he looked like Brian May sorry) but joined us on guitar and Marcel Achten (what happened to him?) on drums. We managed to find rehearsal space at Limbabwe a punk run squat in the middle of town. I remember the looks and comments as we first came there. Long haired metal heads in Limbabwe the punk sanctuary.......... But soon we settled in and had some support from Noël Janssen and Carlo Van Kleef from local punk heroes Gotefix who jammed with us. Crossover became more and more excepted (I was ahead of my time obviously) and the music scene in and around Venlo became more tolerant. My life as a musician changed when I saw AMEBIX play in my local VGdegonzobar Tegelen. Amebix where a Devon (how ironic that I moved to here) based crustpunk band mixing Motorhead, Venom and Black Sabbath influences with hardcore punk like The Exploited, Black Flag and new wave like The Cure and Killing Joke.
