November 1, 2013 I did some hunting yesterday and came close to shooting two turkeys. We spotted each other at about the same time and though there was nothing wrong with that scenario, I was unable to get them to take flight and they seem content just to scoot off together at a run through the woods. I am often asked, “How do you hunt fall turkeys?” Well the best way of course is with a turkey dog, a dog that has been bred and trained to find and bust up flocks of turkeys. I have a good one, a Labrador retriever but he is so old now that I don’t take him into the brush anymore for fear that he’ll become disoriented and lost. And, he is my wife’s dog and I wouldn’t dare come home without him. In lieu of a good dog you have to sneak up on the flock after you have located them (good luck); then running and screaming with much waving of your arms you attempt to get them flying in all directions. If you are successful you only have to set up where they took flight and wait. Within ten to fifteen minutes you’ll hear them key keying and yelping trying to get back together. That is when you join in with like calling and usually within thirty minutes you’ll have several come within gun range. That’s the best and preferred method but without busting them you have very little chance that they’ll come back to a call. Those I failed to get up yesterday sure didn’t but I did have a curious young buck come looking for me. The two other methods that work but require a lot of patience are putting them to bed then getting out before dawn and setting up hoping for a shot when they come down out of the roost and finding where they are feeding; then after setting up wait and hope that they’ll enter that area again and soon. Make a great weekend!
