November 1st, 2013 Tesla Science Foundation 771 South 20 Street Philadelphia, PA 19146 Phone: 484 955 0545 Email: nikolalonhcar@gmail Honorable Serbian women and Serbian men, It has been two centuries since the first Serb, Đorđe Šagić, also known as Judge George Fisher, arrived to America through the Port of Philadelphia. The Tesla Science Foundation has been honored with organizing this historical celebration. The event will take place on Vidovdan, June 28th, 2014 in the city of Philadelphia, in front of the Independence Hall where both the declaration of American independence and the founding of the Constitution took place. Đorđe Šagić had fought for the independence of Texas and Mexico, became a Justice of the Peace in Texas, and eventually moved to California where he was involved in building the first Orthodox churches. After Šagić, more than one million Serbian immigrants arrived to the U.S., settling initially in and around the cities of Pittsburgh and Chicago. Many Serbs became successful and respected citizens of the U.S.: nine Congressmen, six Oscar winners, four Pulitzer Prize winners, and many WWI and WWII heroes. Serbian immigrants and their descendents have built hundreds of Christian Orthodox churches across the country, where they gather to this day to preserve their ethnic and religious identity. On Vidovan 2014 we will celebrate not only the arrival of the first Serb to America, we will also celebrate the contributions of all known and unknown men and women of Serbian heritage, Serbian organizations, and the Serbian Orthodox Church. We will present a number of cultural events on that day: a grand concert of the Serbian culture in the U.S., several exhibitions about Serbian immigrants, famous Serbs and organizations, as well as the uncovering of the Nikola Tesla bust donated by the Serbian government. A large Serbian fair of industry and tourism is also planned in Philadelphia’s Independence Park. We will also commemorate one hundred years since the beginning of the First World War, the war of freedom and sacrifice for the Serbian people, the war that engaged President Woodrow Wilson and Mihailo Pupin in mobilization of 16,000 Serbian immigrants in support of their brethren across the ocean. The Tesla Science Foundation, as the honored organizer of this event, reminds you that this is Our celebration, the celebration of Serbian heritage, both past and future. This event will bring together representatives from the U.S., Serbia, and Republic of Srpska.
