November wildlife update from Rob, November typically is the start of when the cold fronts start taking over our weather systems. Although up to now the current weather conditions have been smashing records with temperatures higher than average we are still seeing the behavioural changes in our local wildlife more suited to the normal early winter temperatures. For instance the Roe deer on the estate are casting their summer coats by replacing them with a much thicker darker hair. Roe in winter look bigger due to this darker coat which provides warmth throughout the winter months. Fox’s also look more set for winter as their coats appear thicker and slightly darker. By spending a lot of time out and about in the woods recently I have noticed both the changes in colour and changes in the colour of the leaves. I didn’t learn this until recently but did you know that red leaves are made from cold nights/temperatures and warm sunshine. The last of the leaves are just about hanging on in there at the minute so catch them whilst you can! The first big moon of the month should see the arrival of Woodcock. Continental birds have been dropping into the east coast so it’s only a matter of time before their numbers build. An easterly air flow should bring these boggle eyed birds back into the woodlands on the estate. They typically are usually seen low and flying away from you as they flush easy without being seen first on the woodland floor. They are most active at night also. Also this month look out for the returning Redwing and Fieldfare as they arrive on mass to invade our hedgerows and orchards! Rob Pocklington Sizergh Ranger
