Now, I resonate to Robin Williams likely suicide because of my own story. I had a grandmother who was put in an asylum, twice, treated with primitive electroshock, among other barbaric methods (remember Snake Pit?), and a mother who was violently bipolar, only diagnosed in her forties. She REFUSED treatment and my father dismissed the diagnosis as nonsense! My mother was frightened of it because of watching her mother go through what she did...but also she was ASHAMED! The fear of that echoed through the rest of her life, and resonated in mine, too. During her final illness, she was given antidepressants and anxiety meds in the hospital. Her VNS nurse Fran Ellis, who had seen it all, said, Wow, I could actually have a lucid conversation with her! Imagine what my mothers life would have been like if she had accepted treatment! We have to WAKE UP!
