Now here is a flashback long forgotten. I just ran across this picture in a box of others from my old Newport News home. A meeting of the Newport News chapter of the Jack and Jill Club of America, picture taken in my parents living room. Yours truly fourth from right top row. My best friend and classmate all the way thru high school Howard Walker (2nd from right top row). Howard got his BA and masters from Univ Mich and PhD from Boston College. Became a US diplomat, foreign service officer and Ambassador to Togo, Madagascar and Comoros. Now retired, goes back and forth between his home in the Wash, DC area and his condo in Cape Town. Second from right middle row is Hazel Reid OLeary. She graduated Fisk University in Nashville and Rutgers Law school in NJ. She later became Energy Secretary in the Clinton Administration and president of Fisk University. She and I were very close as were our families. 4th from left on middle row is my sister Sandra Downing Hamilton (Sue). Next to her on her left is Chuck Allen who became mayor of Newport News and who I saw a few years back at the dedication of the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center honoring my mom. Lost track of so many of these kids I grew up with. Would be nice to know what became of many of them. If anyone thinks they might know I would sure like to hear from you. Family names of those pictured include Rainey, Allen, Tucker, Walker, Scott, Yancy, Johnson, Davis, Shelton, Calloway, Bacote and Dabney.
