Now its the Cavaliers turn! Breed of the Month: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel... a history The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was very popular among noble and royal families as far back as the 16th Century. These lovable little dogs were named after King Charles II (1660-1685) but “Cavalier” was added to their name much later to distinguish from the King Charles Spaniel, (now called the English Toy Spaniel). During Charles II reign he even decreed that these dogs should be allowed anywhere, including Houses of Parliament. To this day it is said the decree is still in effect in England but hasn’t been recently tested. Once Charles II was beheaded, the popularity of the breed began to decrease and Pugs took over. However, the Dukes of Marlborough at Blenheim Palace continued to breed King Charles II version of these dogs instead of mixing them with the Pugs for flat-faced, domed skull spaniel that everyone else was breeding for. It wasn’t until 1945, with the hard work of a few individuals that the Cavalier was finally recognized as a separate breed in England. Less than 10 years later, in 1952 the Cavaliers were brought over to the United States. In 1954 the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club, USA was founded and was the only registering body for these little dogs for over fifty years. They didn’t push the breed to be recognized by the AKC in fear that people would become irresponsible breeders. In 1992 the American Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club was formed and become the parent club for the breed and three years later in 1995 the AKC recognized it as a breed. Stay tuned for more info, pictures and videos of these lovable little dogs throughout the month! Dont forget to stop by the clinic with your Cavalier to get your free gift!
