Now it’s official. Line Pay is here and it’s worldwide (and has an iOS bug) After an unnamed (and hopefully still employed) Line staffer messaged several publications December 4 about the release of Line Pay, the messaging giant had to scramble to put out the word that the app was not live. Almost two weeks later, Line Pay is here, and enduring a bumpy rollout. The payment function is meant to strengthen Line’s ecosystem. With Line Pay, users can send each other money wirelessly without divulging personal information like bank account details. They can also make purchases via the Line Store, a perk which is going to get a lot more appealing once the ecommerce-focused Line Mall takes flight. There is even an online-to-offline element, where participating stores (and in the future taxi services) will accept payment wirelessly via Line Pay. In Japan, users can charge their Line Pay account via their bank account, convenience stores, or Pay Easy machines. That cash can be used to send cash to contacts or make purchases via the web or app at the Line Store. Credit cards can also be registered for making purchases at the store. In an announcement, Line promises that credit card portion of Line Pay will be available to all of their 170 million monthly active users worldwide, regardless of mobile carrier or operating system within one month. The appeal of taking Line Pay worldwide is undeniable but today’s rollout is showing just how difficult it can be to execute this sort of project. After confirming with multiple individuals, spread out across Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, India, and Taiwan, it appears that Line Pay was successfully pushed to the Android but is experiencing inconsistencies in iOS. Feedback was received from both employees and readers of Tech in Asia. While a lucky few have been able to download the latest edition of Line (version 4.8.0) on a fully updated iPhone (version 8.1.2, iPhone 6), others have not been so fortunate. Most individuals get an error message (see below) while others are left in the curious position of updating their app but having no Line Pay option at all. So close…yet so far While Line does caution that the full rollout could take up to one month, the company makes it very clear that Line Pay comes packaged with the latest version of the app. Yet that is not the case for some users. Even so, the problem may be temporary. We talked with a Line spokesman who informed us that as of 6pm local time in Japan, the company’s development team identified the issue and started working to fix the problem. And, it looks like they are working fast. One of our readers who was getting an error message earlier just told us that she can now access Line Pay.
