Now on to what I did not enjoy about the event yesterday. A quick reality check. The part about yesterdays program that I really did not like was the prayer song. I mean, I love the words. Who in their right mind wouldnt praise Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam or Swadesho Bhuvanathrayam. But, honestly, I felt that it was more of a bunch of ideologies connected together and not really a prayer song. IMO, Narendra Modis Central park speech had the perfect scripture for a prayer. ॐ सर्वे भवन्तु सुखिन सर्वे सन्तु निरामया सर्वे भद्राणि पश्यन्तु मा कश्चित् दुःख भाग्भवेत् ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्ति At least they could have used Om Shanti Shanti Shanti as the last phrase? Oh but wait, they cannot. Since it was already recorded and uploaded on YouTube months ago. The girl who sang, I think is also the real singer in the video. But yesterday all she did was to do some sloppy lipsyncing. It didnt even match with the audio, especially towards the end of the prayer. This is the link for the event at MSG. You can clearly see the lipsyncing at 0:56. https://youtube/watch?v=eZ4jbh-SsHc This is the link for the original song, sung by the same artist. https://youtube/watch?v=wI4PCZaxKnY Excellent rendition and great music. Not denying that, but hey, why lipsync then? Or are a singer who needs auto tuning to keep your pitch in check? Why do we let things like this happen? Do we have a dearth of singers? Absolutely Not! There are so so many eminent Classical music singers who would be really happy and proud to grace an International stage with their talents, most of them the average Indian has no clue about. Ever heard of TM Krishna? What about Sanjay Subrahmanyan? Ranjani-Gayathri may be? Kaushiki Chakrabarthy? There are of course, many more older and younger artistes who are very talented and are essentially the torch bearers of our culture worldwide. Why do we need to have a fusion dance, where only the costumes resemble anything close to the traditional dance forms? Have we really hit a n all time low rock bottom that we cannot appreciate or even tolerate our great Indian Classical art forms? BTW, I totally loved the garba!! I could care less for the ChakDe India piece in the beginning. It was honestly a bit scary and totally unnecessary. All I could see was glow-in-the-dark pieces of green and pink. Do we let people get away with shoddy performances just because they are someone of someone who knows someone? Lets appreciate and applaud people for their talents and not for how well they can act as if they are singing. Lets give equal opportunities to the various artistes who have dedicated their lives to the upholding and mastering of the various classical art forms. Lets teach our next generation the value, sanctity and intricacy of classical music and dance. Lets show the world that India has much more to offer than Bollywood and Cricket. PS: Anyone care to explain about the great actor Akshay Kapoor who appeared on stage is? Agreed, my Bollywood Quotient is not that high, but I know a few Khans and Kapoors and this definitely was not the Akshay Kapoor I am familiar with.
