Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise : When as his mother Mary was espoused ( promised , engaged ) , to Joseph , before they came together , she was found to be with child of the Holy Ghost . Matthew 1:18 ... So Mary was engaged to be married , in those times the parents usually choose the spouses , they were like matchmakers , and usually if faithful to the Law and statutes of God , they remained within the same tribe if not , within the children of Israel , Now they were married and it was the custom , in obedience to the law of Moses given by God , to remain virgin until marriage . the covenant of marriage was sealed by the blood , in their wedding night in fact , it was more like a wedding week , where they hoped a child would be conceived .
