Now the the elections are approaching and freedom of expression is of the rise, it is common to hear about the Fijian identity. The govt should give adverts in the TV and media so that the general population is explained the difference between race, nationality and religion. All Fiji citizens are Fijians. This is nationality. Indians, Chinese and iTaukeis are race/ethnicity. Hinduism, Christianity and Islam are religions. If you are citizen of Australia, then you are called Australian. Citizen of USA, American. This is nationality. Just because Indians in Fiji are now correctly referred as Fijians, does not mean that they are stealing a racial or ethnic identity. It is part of our new constitution. The term Fiji was given by the British explorers, it is a few hundred years old. The term Viti refers to land in the Taukei language. Fijian was an identity given by the British to the indigenous population. iTaukei in the new constitution has actually let the indigenous population to their cultural and ethnic roots.
