Now this is a review to chew on.....Thank you! As a newcomer to Dar es Salaam, I became aware of the Baobab Restaurant because my living accommodation was nearby. Id no clue about what to expect on my first visit, I just took a chance to see what was on offer and was pleasantly surprised. Ive been so impressed that Ive been back quite a few times since. This review is representative of several visits over the last eight weeks and not just a one-off, reactive write-up. The consistency in service and food quality has always been evident; its this that truly deserves a good review. These people are trying really hard to do something different and special here in Dar. The chef is world class; theres no doubt about that. Hes a genius thats passionate about what he does and hes not afraid to be interactive with his customers. Many chefs hide away from feedback…not his guy. The front-of-house manager is very hands-on also; shes keen to explain items on the menu and promote the freshest meat, seafood and vegetables of the day. Id urge anyone to give this place a fair chance; its the perfect venue in Dar for an intimate meal with a loved one, family or friends or even a very special group occasion. Most restaurant food critics focus on superficial items and probably cant even fry an egg; I cant understand some of the negativity by some people on this thread... Ive had some cause to ask questions occasionally but its been nothing serious that hasnt be dealt with in a pleasant way with a willingness to pacify the customer. As a guy who has good cooking skills, the food here is wholesome and well presented by a team that are dedicated at what they do. The outdoor dining experience is something that I like very much. The surrounding area is very quiet in the evenings which provides the perfect setting for intimate dining or a conversation over drinks. Many comments have been made towards high pricing which I dont agree with. Most restaurants locally are bar-snack type environments that charge similar prices for what can only be described as deep fried, freezer ready convenience food in what is a loud, pub environment. The exclusion of children here doesnt seem to be popular with many people either, but it does guarantee a tranquil, distraction free environment. Every one of my visits has been reassuringly peaceful enabling a full focus on the company that Ive been with and of course, the food served. Theres nothing worse than somebody elses children at the centre of all the attention. Im lucky to have tried most of the dishes on the last two menus; Id honestly be struggling to pick a favourite. I like seafood very much and have been blown away by what Ive experienced here in Dar at the Baobab. That said, a good steak doesnt disappoint either for a change. Im not a food critic, just an old school guy that appreciates good, well prepared food by creative and passionate professionals.
