Now this is the real deal! Authentic gratitude follows authentic - TopicsExpress

Now this is the real deal! Authentic gratitude follows authentic generosity... His family struggles to make ends meet and he is content and happy with a wood cutting board. That was the true test of his gratitude! He even commented on how he couldnt wait to use it to cut some food on - no doubt to benefit the whole family. Then, when he gets his special gift, he is overwhelmed with emotion knowing how hard his family had to sacrifice for him to have it. This is what we seem to be lacking for the most part in our culture here in the affluent West... Even as a kid in the 1970s - while not to the same extent - I remember having similar feelings when my parents gave me special gifts... It seems to me that this is largely gone now from our youngsters experience - and not because of their fault, but because we have collectively lost this whole concept as a culture and people because of the commercialization and marketing techniques employed to get us all to never be content or grateful for what we have - but to long for the next up-dated model or the next new thing to replace what weve already grown board with. That coupled with an entitlement outlook is where we find ourselves today. Not only am I board with my year old smart-phone (ie. computer, car, ect,,), I deserve the new one as soon as it comes out! Even watching this kids reaction would seem strange to most young people here today - not because they are bad - but because they have not received the understanding and social context for this sentiment and emotional response. I am worried for us as a culture.
