Now what will the three Eastbourne Pier ghosts think of the fire? All three appear from time to time and have been documented as a phantom World War One soldier who it seems is keeping a promise to return to meet his sweet heart but he is still waiting while she is long dead. The other two were kept quite at the time of the opening of Eastbourne Pier on April13th 1870 but thanks to Scottish lady Andrea Helgar, (1850 - 1919) who lived in Eastbourne for her first twenty six years documented two deaths at the time of the opening which were kept very hush hush for fear of superstition and scandal overwhelming the opening ceremony. The first was a young lady who was raped and strangled under the pier and whose cries are said to be heard in the wind. Her cries coming from under the structure which have attracted attention from passer bys who find nothing and quickly vacate the spot. The third and final ghost is said to be that of a young girl of eighteen who hung herself from the structure two nights before it opened. Even last summer and twice this year people have reported to me seeing the girl.
