Nuggets from Whatever Happened to Heaven? by Dave Hunt The false teaching that the church must be purified here on earth in order to fit her for heaven, although by no means as heretical, contains some obvious and significant similarities to Catholiciisms doctrine of purgatory. The latter requires each individual to be purged through suffering for his sins here upon earth. Whatever purification of sins is still lacking at the time of death must be accomplished thereafter in a place called purgatory in order for the soul to gain entrance into heaven. Both teachings make heaven so elusive a hope that it ceases to be the motivating power it once was for the early church.
