Numbers 13:31 But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we. These men were never instructed to decide whether or not they could conquer the people who inhabited their land. But that’s what they did. Moses was the one who gave them their authority and they used that authority to turn the people’s hearts against the promises of God. It is very important that we give our authority only to faithful men and women. Those we commit power and authority to can do a lot of damage to us. Joshua 2:9-12 And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you. 10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed. 11 And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath. 12 Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my fathers house, and give me a true token: Rahab told the two spies that forty years earlier–that’s the time being recorded in this chapter–the heart of every man had fainted and there was no courage left in any man. Why didn’t they bring back that report? Either they didn’t probe deeply enough or they just ignored the positive in lieu of the negative. When we evaluate our challenges, we need to search for the positives, not just look for the negatives.
