Nutrition for Judo Athletes Food is broken down into the following groups: Carbohydrates – these are our key energy source. Fats – another key energy source - some are essential Minerals – inorganic elements required in small amounts which have multiple roles including the correct regulation of vitamin synthesis. Proteins – needed for the growth and repair of muscles and body tissue. Roughage – the fibrous indigestible portion of our diet which is needed for a healthy digestive system. Vitamins – water soluble and fat soluble vitamins are important in many of the body’s functions Water - most people do not drink enough. Properly hydrated cells are absolutely essential for health, well being and performance. To get the wide range of nutrients the body needs to remain healthy it is important to choose a variety of foods from all of the above groups every day. You need to understand the volume and proportions of each group that you need to consume. The energy you use up together with the volume and proportion of each food group in your diet is directly related to your body shape and weight. For athletes the food you eat is directly related to your performance.
